Unexpected medical expense can be one of the biggest challenges we face as we age. Unfortunately, many traditional Medicare participants learn that a hospital’s decision to either admit or observe them during a hospital stay can cost them several thousand dollars should they need to pursue short-term rehabilitation in a post-acute setting.
During a hospital stay, you need to be admitted, not under observation, and have a three midnight hospital stay in order for Medicare to cover your short-term rehabilitation stay.
Currently, there is a bipartisan effort in Congress to ease the burden of this regulation through the Improving Access to Medicare Coverage Act (S 843/HR 1571). However, until the requirements change, make sure that you and your loved ones are aware of this very important caveat!
